Etymology
Compound of เวียง (wiiang, “city”) + จันทน์ (jan, “sandalwood”), literally “sandalwood city”, based on a legend that the city was surrounded by sandalwood forests or that the boundary markers of the city were made of sandalwood.[1]
Compare Lao ວຽງຈັນທນ໌ (wīang chan than), an archaic spelling of ວຽງຈັນ (wīang chan).
