From Proto-Tai *m.lecᴰ (grain). Cognate with Lao ເມັດ (met), Northern Thai ᨾᩮᩢ᩠ᨯ, ᦵᦙᧆ (med), Tai Dam ꪣꪲꪒ, Shan မဵတ်ႉ (mâ̰et). Doublet of เม็ด (mét) and เล็ด (lét).
