From Proto-Tai *m.lecᴰ (“grain”). Cognate with Lao ເມັດ (met), Northern Thai ᨾᩮᩢ᩠ᨯ, Lü ᦵᦙᧆ (med), Tai Dam ꪣꪲꪒ, Shan မဵတ်ႉ (mâ̰et). Doublet of เม็ด (mét) and เล็ด (lét).
