From corruption of Thai นิรเทศ, from Sanskrit निर्देश (nirdeśa, “command; instruction”, literally “away from land; out of land; without land”), from निर् (nir, “out; without; away”) + देश (deśa, “land”).

By surface analysis, เนร (nree) +‎ เทศ (têet).

Cognate with Khmer និរទេស (niteih). Compare Lao ນິຣະເທດ (ni ra thēt).
