From หมา (mǎa) + ใน (nai); the latter component from Proto-Tai *nay (“dhole”). The latter component is also cognate with Lao ໄນ (nai), Northern Thai ᨶᩱ, Khün ᨶᩱ, Lü ᦺᦓ (nay), Shan ၼႆး (nái), Tai Nüa ᥘᥭᥰ (läy).
