From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰmɔːnᴬ¹ (cushion; pillow). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᨾᩬᩁ, Khün ᩉ᩠ᨾᩬᩁ, Lao ໝອນ (mǭn), ᦖᦸᧃ (ṁoan), Tai Dam ꪢꪮꪙ, Tai Dón ꪢꪮꪙ, Tai Daeng ꪢꪮꪙ, Shan မွၼ် (mǎun), Phake မ︀ွꩫ︀် (mon), Ahom 𑜉𑜨𑜃𑜫 (mon), Nong Zhuang moan, Zuojiang Zhuang mon.
