Etymology 1
Borrowed from Pali mahesi (“maharṣi”), from maha (“great”) + isi (“rṣi”). By surface analysis, มห (má-hà-) + อิสี.
Cognate with Modern Khmer មហេសី (mĕəʼheesəy).
Compare Sanskrit महर्षि (maharṣi), whence Thai มหาฤษี.
