Borrowed from Pali bimba (disk, sphere; mirror; shadow; image, picture; type; etc), ultimately from Sanskrit बिम्ब (bimba, idem). Cognate with Lao ພິມ (phim), Northern Thai ᨻᩥᨾᩛ᩺, ᦘᦲᧄ (phiim), Shan ၽိမ်း (phím), Old Khmer bhima, Modern Khmer ពុម្ព (pum).
