Etymology
From a prefix บัน (ban) of unclear function and origin + a reflex of Proto-Tai *ɗrwajᴬ (“stairs; ladder”).[1]
Cognate with Northern Thai ᨡᩢ᩠᩶ᨶᨯᩱ, ᨡᩧ᩠᩶ᨶᨯᩱ or ᨤᩢ᩠ᨶᨯᩱ; Lao ກະໄດ (ka dai) or ຂັ້ນໄດ (khan dai); Lü ᦃᦹᧃᧉᦺᦡ (ẋuen²ḋay); Tai Dam ꪅꪽꪼꪒ or ꪅꪽꪼꪨ; Tai Dón ꪼꪒ; Shan ၶူဝ်လႆ (khǒ lǎi) or ၶၼ်ႈလႆ (khān lǎi); Phake က︀ႃလ︀ႝ (kālay); Ahom 𑜁𑜠𑜓𑜩 (khaday); Zhuang lae or ndoi (dialectal); Nong Zhuang lae as in mboaklae.
The prefix บัน- (and obsolete บรร-) has been speculated to be derived from Khmer, though the language has had no such word. Modern Khmer uses the unrelated ជណ្ដើរ (cŭəndaə).
