Etymology
Borrowed from Sanskrit पञ्जी (pañjī, “almanac; calendar; register”); possibly via Old Khmer pañjīy, pañjiy, pañjiya, pāñjiy, pañjīy, pāñjī (“register, record book, account book; rolls, records, lists, archives; recorder, registrar, archivist; to record, to register”). Cognate with Modern Khmer បញ្ជី (bɑñcii), Lao ບັນຊີ (ban sī).
