From Proto-Southwestern Tai *nuətᴰ²ᴸ (“to massage; to rub”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨶ᩠ᩅᨯ, Khün ᨶ᩠ᩅᨯ, Lao ນວດ (nūat), Lü ᦷᦓᧆ (nod), Shan ၼူတ်ႈ (nūut), Tai Nüa ᥘᥨᥖ (lot) or ᥢᥨᥖ (not), Ahom 𑜃𑜤𑜄𑜫 (nut).
