From Old Khmer ថាស (thāsa), ថាស៑ (thās), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *thaas (salver; tray). Cognate with Khmer ថាស (thaah), Northern Thai ᨳᩣ᩠ᨯ, Khün ᨳᩣ᩠ᨯ, Lao ຖາດ (thāt), Mon ထး, Nyah Kur ทาด.
