Borrowed from Middle Khmer *tamrās, extended from trasa, trassa, trāsa, trãsa, trâsa, trāssa, trãssa (to illuminate, to enlighten; to declare, to speak; etc) (whence Thai ตรัส (dtràt)). Cognate with Modern Khmer តម្រាស់ (tɑmrŏəh).
