Learned borrowing from Pali tāvatiṃsa (literally “thirty-three”), ultimately from Sanskrit त्रयस्त्रिंश (trayastriṃśa), whence Thai ตรัยตรึงศ์.

Cognate with Burmese တာဝတိံသာ (tawa.timsa), Lao ດາວະດິງ (dā wa ding).
