Compound of กุมภ (gum-pá-, “pitcher”, a type of sea monster) +‎ อาพันธ์ (“affection; attachment”), literally “affection of the pitcher (Aquarius)”; coined by Thai prince Devawongse Varoprakar in 1889.[1]
