Etymology
Inherited from Old Kannada ಗವುಂಡ (gavuṇḍa). Suryanath U. Kamath considers the word Gowda is derives from Gavunda.[1] Gustav Oppert opined that the root of ‘Gowda’ is a Dravidian word meaning "mountain".[2] The term Gowda and its archaic forms in Old Kannada such as ಗಮುಂಡ (gamuṇḍa), ಗವುಂಡ (gavuṇḍa), ಗವುಡ (gavuḍa), ಗೋಂಡ (gōṇḍa) appear frequently in the inscriptions of Karnataka.
