పడమఱ (paḍamaṟa)

Charles Philip makes a derivation from పడు (paḍu, “falling”) + ఞాయిఱు (ñāyiṟu, “sun”) in parallel to Malayalam പടിഞ്ഞാറ് (paṭiññāṟŭ) which is made in a similar way but Telugu doesnt have a descendant from Proto-South Dravidian I *ñācVṯu, neither does a ñāyiṟu > mara sound plausible. Other possible cognates include Adilabad Gondi ఫరాయీఙ్ (pharāyīṅ)^[1]. (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.)
