Etymology

    First attested in c. 1729–1745[1] as Middle Gujarati घडीयाल (gong), from Old Gujarati घडीआल (ghaḍīāla) (c. 1497-1531), from Sanskrit *घटीताड (*ghaṭītāḍa), from घटी (ghaṭī, pot, water clock, period of 24 minutes) +‎ ताड (tāḍa, blow).[2]
