Etymology

Borrowed from Classical Persian فقرا (fuqarā), from Arabic فُقَرَاء (fuqarāʔ), plural of فَقِير (faqīr) (whence ਫ਼ਕੀਰ (fakīr, fakir)). For semantic development as a singular noun, compare Turkish fukara, Indonesian fukara, Swahili fukara.
