From either the oblique or locative singular of ਪਿੱਛਾ (picchā, “back, rear, hindpart”). Ultimately inherited from Prakrit 𑀧𑀘𑁆𑀙 (paccha), from Sanskrit पश्च (paśca), from Proto-Indo-European *pos-kʷéh₁. Cognate with Bengali পাছা (pacha) and Belarusian позні (pózni, “late”).
