Etymology
Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀙𑀸𑀯𑀮 (chāvala), from Prakrit 𑀙𑀸𑀯 (chāva) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀮- (-la-), from Sanskrit *छाप (*chāpa, “young one”). Doublet of ছা (cha) and ছানা (chana). Cognate with Assamese ছৱাল (sowal), Romani ćhavo.
