Etymology
Etymology tree
Inherited from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʰr̥tás, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰr̥-t-ós, traditionally said to be from *gʰer- (“to yearn for”), but this is now considered dubious; see the root हृ (hṛ) for further discussion. Cognate with Ancient Greek χαρτός (khartós).
