    Inherited from Apabhramsa 𑆲𑆴𑆪𑆃 (hiyaa), from Prakrit 𑀳𑀺𑀅𑀅 (hiaa), from Sanskrit हृद॑य (hṛ́daya), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰŕ̥dayam, from *ȷ́ʰā́rd, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱḗr, from *ḱerd-. Cognate to Gujarati હૈયું (haiyũ), Marwari हिवड़ा (hivṛā), Assamese হিয়া (hia), Bengali হিয়া (hiẏa), Punjabi ਹੀਆ (hīā). Doublet of हृदय (hŕday) and दिल (dil). Compare English heart, Latin cor, and Ancient Greek καρδίᾱ (kardíā) (whence English cardia).
