Etymology

Probably related to Ancient Greek σπάθη (spáthē) and English spade. The term may derive from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ph₂-y-o-, from *(s)peh₂- (to draw).[1] Alternatively, the EIEC suggests that the term emerged from Proto-Indo-European *sph₂-yó-, itself perhaps metathesized from *h2/3osp-, whence also perhaps Proto-Germanic *aspō[2]
