Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hrawpāśás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hrawpāćás, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂(w)lṓp-. Cognate with Avestan 𐬎𐬭𐬎𐬞𐬌 (urupi), 𐬭𐬀𐬊𐬞𐬌 (raopi), Latin vulpēs (“fox”), Ancient Greek ἀλώπηξ (alṓpēx), and Lithuanian lapė.
