Inherited from Old Hindi लाड (lāḍa), from Prakrit [Term?]—compare Prakrit लड्डिअ n (laḍḍia, “fondling”)—, ultimately related to Sanskrit लड् (laḍ, “to dally”). Related to ललित (lalit, “loved”) and लालन (lālan, “cherishing”). Cognate with Marathi लाड (lāḍ), Punjabi ਲਾਡ (lāḍ), and Gujarati લાડ (lāḍ),
