From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ríš-ya-ti (“to be hurt, to be wounded”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬌𐬭𐬌𐬱𐬌𐬌𐬈𐬌𐬙𐬌 (irišiieiti). Also compare रेष (reṣa).
