Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *mayníš, probably from Proto-Indo-European *mey- (to exchange). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬉𐬌𐬥𐬌 (maēini, punishment, castigation).[1][2]
