Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Iranian *mr̥tíš, from Proto-Indo-European *mértis (“death, dying”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬌𐬙𐬌 (mərəiti), Latin mors (“death”), Lithuanian mirti̇̀s (“death”).

- सो ऽयं दुर्मर्षहृदयो ब्रह्मध्रुक् च लोके ऽपकीर्तिं महतीम् अवाप्स्यति ।
यद् अङ्गजां स्वां पुरुषद्विड् उद्यतां न प्रत्यषेधन् मृतये ऽपराधतः ॥- so ʼyaṃ durmarṣahṛdayo brahmadhruk ca loke ʼpakīrtiṃ mahatīm avāpsyati.
yad aṅgajāṃ svāṃ puruṣadviḍ udyatāṃ na pratyaṣedhan mṛtaye ʼparādhataḥ. - [The people said:] "This [Dakṣa] of intolerant heart, the hater of the Brahman, will reap great infamy in this world. This hater of god Śiva did not prevent his own daughter, while she prepared for death, on account of the disrespectful treatment meted out to her."
