Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *mayš- (to blink, wink), from Proto-Indo-European *meyg⁽ʷ⁾ʰ- (to blink, cover (the eyes)) (which has implicitly been linked with Proto-Indo-European *h₃meygʰ- (mist; to drizzle), see Proto-Slavic *meigā́ˀtei (to blink) for more). Cognate with Persian مژه (može, eyelash), Lithuanian miẽgas (sleep), Proto-Slavic *měžiti (to close one's eyes).[1][2][3][4]
