Borrowed from Classical Persian مَنْحُوس (manhūs), from Arabic مَنْحُوس (manḥūs).

  1. unfortunate, unlucky, ill-omened, inauspicious
    अमरीका में कई लोग काली बिल्लियों को मनहूस मानते हैं।

    In the US, some people consider black cats to be unlucky.
  2. grim, forbidding, ominous (of atmosphere, or aspect)
