भाटा
Hindi
Alternative forms
- भाठा (bhāṭhā)
Etymology
Grassman variant of भाठा (bhāṭhā), from Prakrit भट्ठ (bhaṭṭha), from Sanskrit भ्रष्ट (bhraṣṭa, “fallen, ruined”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰraštás, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrn̥ḱtós (“deviated, corrupted”), from *bʰrenḱ- (“to deviate, corrupt”).
There was semantic shift in Prakrits from moral decline to literal (physical) decline, often in relation with water. Cognate with Assamese ভাটা (bhata), Bengali ভাটা (bhaṭa), Odia ଭଟା (bhaṭā), Bihari भाठ (bhāṭh, “land which retains moisture”), Gujarati ભાઠ (bhāṭh, “shoal, shallow”), Sindhi ڀاٽو (bhāṭho), Sinhalese බට (baṭa, “descent”). Doublet of भ्रष्ट (bhraṣṭ) and भाठ (bhāṭh). Related to भटकना (bhaṭaknā), भठियाना (bhaṭhiyānā, “to ebb”), and Old Hindi भाठी (bhāṭhī, “downstream”).
