Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘢𑘘𑘺𑘩 (paṭaila), from Prakrit 𑀧𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀇𑀮𑁆𑀮 (paṭṭaïlla), from Sanskrit पट्टकिल (paṭṭakila, “tenant of a royal land”). Cognate with Gujarati પટેલ (paṭel).
