Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *naHdʰ-, from Proto-Indo-European *neh₃dʰ-, related to आध्र (ādhra, poor, destitute) and perhaps Ancient Greek νωθρός (nōthrós, sluggish, slothful). Influenced नाथ् (nāth), but not etymologically related to it, contrary to Monier-Williams and Whitney.
