Etymology
From late Proto-Indo-European *néptis, a dialectal variant of *néptih₂ (“niece, granddaughter, female descendant”). Latin neptis and Avestan 𐬥𐬀𐬞𐬙𐬌 (napti) are formal cognates. See also नप्ती (naptī).
