Inherited from Sanskrit *धूमान्ध (*dhūmāndha, “dim-sighted”), from धूम (dhūma, “smoke, mist”) +‎ अन्ध (andha, “blind”) (compare attested धूमाक्ष (dhūmākṣa, “dim-eyed”)). Compare Punjabi ਧੁੰਦਲਾ (dhundlā) and Gujarati ધૂંધળું (dhū̃dhaḷũ).
