Etymology

Inherited from Middle Hindi دھند (dhnd /⁠dhund⁠/) (c. 1562),[1] from Sanskrit *धूमान्ध (*dhūmāndha), from धूम (dhūmá, smoke, haze) +‎ अन्ध (andhá, blind) (compare धूमाक्ष (dhūmākṣá)).[2]
