From Proto-Indo-Aryan *dádʰaHti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰádʰaHti, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰédʰeh₁ti, from *dʰeh₁- (“to put, place, set”). Cognate with Ancient Greek τίθημι (títhēmi), Latin faciō. Old English dōn (whence English do). The "wish to give" senses are from a conflation with ददाति (dadāti) in PIE, see Latin -dō.[1]
