Inherited from Prakrit थुक्क (thukka), which is ultimately onomatopoeic. Related to थूकना (thūknā). Compare Punjabi ਥੁੱਕ (thukka), Nepali थुक (thuk), Gujarati થૂંક (thū̃k), Assamese থু (thu).
