Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *táyǰyas (sharper), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)téyg-yōs ~ *(s)tig-is-és (sharper), from *(s)teyg- (to be sharp, to sting). Cognate with Middle Persian [script needed] (tyc /⁠tēz⁠/) (whence Classical Persian تیز (tēz, sharp; quick, swift; sharp-witted).

      téjīyasā mánasā tvóta utá śikṣa svapatyásya śikṣóḥ.
      ágne rāyó nṛ́tamasya prábhūtau bhūyā́ma te suṣṭutáyaś ca vásvaḥ.
      The one aided by you, O Agni is of a sharper mind. Give us wealth in the form of good progeny!
      May we be in abundance of excellent wealth and of the treasures of your praises.
