Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *(s)teyg- (“to be sharp”). Cognate with Hittite [script needed] (tekan, “hoe”), Ancient Greek στίζω (stízō), Old Persian 𐎫𐎥𐎼 (tigra, “sharp”), Persian (tiz, “sharp”), German stechen (“to poke”), English stick.
