Inherited from Old Hindi ढंग (ḍhaṃga).[1] Cognate with Marathi ढंग (ḍhaṅga), Punjabi ਢੰਗ (ḍhaṅg), and Gujarati ઢંગ (ḍhaṅg).

Of uncertain further origin perhaps shared with ढब (ḍhab, style, manner),[2][3] डौल (ḍaul, style, manner, shape, build), ढर्रा (ḍharrā, style, manner, habit), ढाल (ḍhāl, cast, mould, form, way, manner, habit), ढाँचा (ḍhā̃cā, framework), and ठाठ (ṭhāṭh, style, framework, fashion).
