1. since, inasmuch as, due to the fact that (used at the start of a clause)

   मुझे उसके साथ करना था, मगर चूँकि उसने कह दिया कि वह आना ही नहीं चाहता, लग रहा है उसके बिना शुरू करना पड़ेगा।

   mujhe uske sāth karnā thā, magar cū̃ki usne kah diyā ki vah ānā hī nahī̃ cāhtā, lag rahā hai uske binā śurū karnā paṛegā.

   I wanted to do it with him, but since he's said he doesn't even want to come, I guess we'll have to start without him.

• In colloquial speech, except in Uttar Pradesh, this is commonly replaced with क्योंकि (kyõki, “because”).
