With variant forms च्यूँटी (cyū̃ṭī), चिउँटी (ciũṭī), inherited from Old Hindi चींटी (cīṃṭī), चिउँटी (cium̐ṭī), चाँटी (cām̐ṭī), चाँटा (cām̐ṭā),[1] of uncertain origin. Maybe related to चिमटा (cimṭā, pincers).[2]
