Etymology

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀕𑁄𑀯𑀸𑀮 (govāla), from Sanskrit गोपाल (gōpālá, “cow-carer; name of Krishna”). Cognate with Gujarati ગોવાળ (govāḷ).
