Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *kawp-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kawp-, from Proto-Indo-European *kwep- (to boil, smoke, move violently). Cognate with Latin cupio (I desire), vapor (steam), Lithuanian kūpėti, and perhaps Old English hopa (whence English hope).
