Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀅𑀁𑀓 (aṃka) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-) + -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit अङ्क (aṅka, “hook”). Compare Gujarati આંકડો (ā̃kaḍo), Marathi आकडा (ākḍā), Bengali আঁকড়া (ãkoṛa) . Doublet of अंक (aṅk).
