Inherited from Aramaic תִּשְׁרִין, from Akkadian 𒌗𒌆 (^ititašrītu, “beginning”), possibly because the early Arameans regarded autumn as the start of the year or because this month is the start of the second-half of the year from ܢܝܼܣܵܢ (nīsān). The written form is based on Classical Syriac while the inherited form is likely from the medial stage *ܬܫܹܪܝܼܢ (*tšērīn) as a back-formation of the plural ܬܫܸܪ̈ܝܲܘܵܬ݂ܵܐ (tširyawwāṯā); compare Turoyo ܬܫܶܪܷܢ (tšerën).
