Inherited from Aramaic שֵׁגְדָּא (šeḡdā), from Akkadian 𒄑𒇵 (šiqdum, “almond tree, nut as well as wood”, collective); cognate to Classical Syriac ܫܓܕܬܐ (šeḡdṯā), Hebrew שָׁקֵד (shaqéd), Phoenician 𐤔𐤒𐤃 (šqd, “almond; almond-tree”) and Ugaritic 𐎘𐎖𐎄 (ṯqd, “almond; almond-tree”).
