Inherited from Aramaic שֵׁגְדָּא (šeḡdā), from Akkadian 𒄑𒇵 (šiqdum, almond tree, nut as well as wood, collective); cognate to Classical Syriac ܫܓܕܬܐ (šeḡdṯā), Hebrew שָׁקֵד (shaqéd), Phoenician 𐤔𐤒𐤃 (šqd, almond; almond-tree) and Ugaritic 𐎘𐎖𐎄 (ṯqd, almond; almond-tree).
