Borrowed from Classical Syriac, from Biblical Hebrew שָׁאוּל (Shaúl, literally “asked for”). Doublet of ܫܝܼܠܵܐ (šīlā, “Silas”) and ܫܐܝܼܠܵܐ (šˀīlā, “asked for, supposed”).
