ܩܫܛ

Assyrian Neo-Aramaic

Etymology

Root
ܩ ܫ ܛ (q š ṭ)
1 term

Developed either from the original meaning “to shoot an arrow” (in the relation that both a drawn bow and being overweight have with being curved) or from “to be in order, well” into “to gain weight”. The semantic shift also occurred in the synonym ܬܵܪܹܨ (tārēṣ, to gain weight) and in Turoyo ܬܳܩܷܢ (toqën, to gain weight) (both having the same original meaning “to be in order”). Compare Classical Syriac ܩܫܲܛ (qšaṭ, to shoot an arrow).

Pronunciation

  • (Standard) IPA(key): [qaːʃɪtˤ]
